CBSE OBE: Testing the Waters with English, Mathematics, and Science for Classes 9 and 10, and English, Mathematics, and Biology for Classes 11 and 12

In a significant move towards modernizing the assessment methodologies in the Indian education system, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has unveiled plans to implement Open-Book Examinations (OBE) for students of classes 9 to 12. This step aims to shift the focus from rote memorization to fostering critical thinking skills among students.

The CBSE board examinations for classes 10 and 12 are currently in full swing, with a substantial number of students bracing themselves for these crucial assessments. As per the CBSE, this year, more than 39 lakh students from India and 26 other countries are taking the Class 10 and Class 12 Board exams. The board examinations for Class 10 will conclude on March 13, 2024, and for Class 12 on April 2. In the preceding year of 2023, a combined total of 38.82 lakh students participated in the Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations.

Embracing Change

Traditionally, examinations have been viewed as a test of memorization prowess, where students often resort to cramming vast amounts of information without truly understanding the concepts. However, the introduction of OBE marks a paradigm shift, challenging students to delve deeper into subjects and apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios.

To ensure the smooth implementation of OBEs, CBSE plans to conduct pilot runs in selected schools, targeting subjects like English, Mathematics, and Science for classes 9 and 10, and English, Mathematics, and Biology for classes 11 and 12.
