In a recent development, the Education Ministry has issued a directive urging all states and Union territories to ensure that the age of admission to Grade 1 is six years or above starting from the academic session of 2024-25.
Citing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, the Ministry emphasizes the importance of aligning admission policies with these provisions.
The Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, conveyed this directive in a letter dated 15th February 2024. The letter references prior communications urging compliance with NEP 2020 and RTE Act, 2009.
States and UTs are expected to have adjusted their admission criteria accordingly, ensuring that children entering Grade 1 are at least six years old. With the 2024-25 session set to commence shortly, the Ministry emphasizes the need for prompt implementation of this policy.
