The DEEO had also announced the closure of all schools in the district from September 24 to September 27 as a precautionary measure against the severe heat. With the improvement in weather conditions, this order has been lifted, allowing students to return to their regular routines.
Schools in Assam's Kamrup Metropolitan district, primarily in Guwahati, will return to their regular schedules starting Tuesday, October 1, 2024. The decision comes as temperatures have dropped following recent rainfall, prompting the District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO) to rescind the earlier directive for shortened school hours.
Rescinding of Previous Heat-Related Directives
On September 20, the DEEO had implemented new school hours from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM due to extreme heat conditions. However, the recent rainfall has led to a cooling trend, allowing for the reinstatement of normal school timings. The latest order stated, “...it is hereby instructed that all Govt./Provincialised/Private schools under Kamrup Metro district shall follow their regular normal school timing w.e.f 1st October 2024.”
Temporary School Closures Due to Heat
The DEEO had also announced the closure of all schools in the district from September 24 to September 27 as a precautionary measure against the severe heat. With the improvement in weather conditions, this order has been lifted, allowing students to return to their regular routines.
Guidelines to Protect Student Health
In response to the prevailing heatwave conditions across parts of Assam, the state government previously issued guidelines aimed at protecting students' health. These measures included adjustments to school timings in various regions affected by extreme temperatures.
Widespread Heatwave in the Northeastern Region
Officials from the regional weather office have noted that the seven northeastern states—Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh—have been experiencing heatwave-like conditions recently. The recent rains have provided much-needed relief, allowing educational institutions to resume normal operations.
