This initiative is part of the state government’s broader effort to strengthen the social support system for women and children, providing them with safe and nurturing spaces for growth and learning.

The Punjab government has announced a major initiative to construct 1,419 anganwadi centres across the state at an investment of INR 200 crore. The announcement was made by Baljit Kaur, the Social Security, Women, and Child Development Minister. The project aims to promote the holistic development of women and children, ensuring better infrastructure and resources for the welfare of the state’s most vulnerable communities.

Focus on Holistic Child Development

Minister Kaur emphasized that the initiative is not just about building physical structures but creating an environment that fosters the physical, cognitive, and emotional development of children. She said, "The plan includes constructing new anganwadi centres, upgrading existing ones, improving sanitation facilities, and equipping centres with furniture and other necessary amenities."

This initiative is part of the state government’s broader effort to strengthen the social support system for women and children, providing them with safe and nurturing spaces for growth and learning.

Phased Construction Plan and Progress

The project will be rolled out in phases, with 1,000 anganwadi centres being constructed in the first phase. Out of these, 56 centres have already been completed, and 644 centres are currently under construction. Additionally, the construction of 300 more centres will begin soon, with approvals for 156 centres already granted.

The government is focused on meeting the deadlines for these projects, aiming to complete them at the earliest to ensure timely benefits for children and families. Minister Kaur assured that the construction work will be expedited to enhance infrastructure and support early childhood development programs.

Upgrading Existing Anganwadi Centres

Along with the construction of new centres, the Punjab government is also working on the upgradation of 350 existing anganwadi centres across the state. The INR 7 crore allocated for this initiative will be used to enhance the facilities at these centres, ensuring that they are well-equipped to provide better services to the children and women who depend on them.

Minister Kaur pointed out that the upgrades will include improvements to sanitation facilities, furniture, and teaching materials, creating a more conducive environment for learning and development. The government is committed to ensuring that the upgraded facilities meet the growing demands and expectations of communities.

Commitment to Recruitment of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers

In line with the construction and upgradation efforts, the Punjab government also plans to recruit 3,000 Anganwadi workers and helpers to ensure the smooth functioning of the centres. Minister Kaur revealed that last year, the government recruited 5,000 workers and helpers purely on merit, reinforcing the commitment to creating a fair and transparent recruitment process.

These newly recruited workers will play a crucial role in managing the daily activities at the centres, working directly with children and families to support early childhood education, nutrition, and health services.

Government’s Vision for Women and Child Development

The Punjab government’s focus on strengthening the anganwadi infrastructure is part of its larger vision for the overall development of women and children in the state. By improving infrastructure, equipping the centres with the right tools, and ensuring the recruitment of qualified personnel, the government aims to create a supportive and empowering environment for women and children to thrive.

Minister Kaur concluded by stating that the government's efforts reflect its commitment to improving basic infrastructure and ensuring that the welfare of women and children remains a priority in the state’s development agenda.
