The District Magistrate, Dhiraj Singh Garbiyal, cited the expected increase in pilgrim numbers as the reason behind the closure. He announced that both government and non-government schools, along with Anganwadi centers, will adhere to this directive.
In light of the ongoing Kanwar Yatra and the influx of Lord Shiva devotees, schools in Haridwar district will remain closed for a week starting July 27. This decision affects students from classes 1 to 12, with schools set to reopen on August 2.
The District Magistrate, Dhiraj Singh Garbiyal, cited the expected increase in pilgrim numbers as the reason behind the closure. He announced that both government and non-government schools, along with Anganwadi centers, will adhere to this directive.
The Kanwar Yatra, an annual pilgrimage where devotees from states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana visit Haridwar and Rishikesh to collect holy water from the Ganga, commenced in Uttarakhand earlier this week. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami welcomed the Kanwariyas and urged them to ensure cleanliness along the riverbanks.
Director General of Police (DGP) Abhinav Kumar emphasized the logistical challenge posed by the Kanwar Mela, highlighting the extensive zoning and security measures undertaken across the pilgrimage area.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has temporarily halted directives from certain state governments regarding eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route. The Court issued notices to Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh, where the Yatra is prominent, scheduling a hearing on July 26.
The closure of schools aims to ensure public safety and facilitate smooth conduct of the Kanwar Yatra, aligning with efforts to manage the significant pilgrimage activity in Haridwar.
