Students in Assam will receive education in their mother tongue up to Class 5, the Education Minister announced.

Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed all the schools in the state under the different education boards to teach students in Assamese and other regional languages up to Class 5. The Minister during his Independence Day Speech at Morigaon said that students in the state will receive education in their mother tongue up to Class 5.

“English medium schools will be required to teach in Assamese, Tiwa, Rabha, Bodo, or other regional languages. English as a medium of instruction can start only from Class 6,” Mr. Sarma said. The Assam government has also passed legislation that has made it mandatory for all boards to compulsorily teach Assamese up to Class 10. The state government has also formed a task force to implement the new National Education Policy 2020 by December.

Last month, the Union Cabinet gave its approval to the new National Education Policy 2020. The NEP states: “Wherever possible, students till Class 5 in schools should be taught in mother tongue/regional language/local language.” The idea is drawn from various studies that show young children best understand things in their mother tongue or home language.

On August 18, the Minister also announced that girl students who have secured first division in their Assam HSC board exams 2020 under the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, or AHSEC will receive free scooty. Over 22,000 girl students will be given free scooty under the ‘Pragyan Bharti’ scheme. The government also decided to reserve 25 per cent seats in government colleges for state board students.

The budget for each scooty is fixed between Rs 50,000 and 55,000. Girl students who want electric scooty will be able required to submit their application at sebaonline.org, Mr Sarma said.
