The chief minister's office stated, “Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Tamil Nadu on 16th October. Given the above, the Government has decided to declare a Public Holiday tomorrow.”

TN Schools, Colleges Closed: The Tamil Nadu government has declared a public holiday for schools and colleges in four northern districts—Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Chengelpet—on Wednesday, October 16, due to heavy rainfall affecting the state. The chief minister's office stated, “Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Tamil Nadu on 16th October. Given the above, the Government has decided to declare a Public Holiday tomorrow.”

Closure of Government Offices

All government offices, including those of Public Undertakings, Corporations, and boards, will also remain closed on this day in the affected districts. However, essential services such as police, fire services, milk supply, and hospitals will continue to operate normally. Additionally, banks, transport services, and disaster response teams will remain active.

Impact of Heavy Rainfall

Intermittent rain has already caused significant disruptions across Chennai and other regions, with reports of knee-deep water accumulating on roads in several residential neighborhoods. In flood-prone areas like Ram Nagar in Madippakkam, residents took precautions by parking their vehicles on nearby elevated bridges.

Response to Flooding

Over 300 locations across Chennai have reported flooding, severely impacting public transportation. Authorities deployed heavy-duty pumps to address waterlogging, and, fortunately, no major incidents have been reported aside from a wall collapse that resulted in minor injuries.

The state government has mobilized disaster response force teams, with over 200 boats on standby in vulnerable locations. More than 931 relief centers have been established across Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengelpet, and Kancheepuram, with IAS officers monitoring the situation continuously.

Transport Disruptions

In light of the severe weather, Southern Railway has canceled four express trains, including the Chennai Central-Mysuru Kaveri Express, and redirected several others to Avadi, a station farther from Chennai Central. The Chennai airport has also seen the cancellation of several domestic flights due to the adverse conditions.
