IIM Calcutta launches IIMCIP Technology & IIMC-TIC to Boost East and Northeast India

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta has taken a significant step towards fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in East and Northeast India by establishing the "IIMCIP Technology and Innovation Council" (IIMC-TIC). This initiative falls under the auspices of the IIM Calcutta Innovation Park (IIMCIP), recognized as a Technology Business Incubator by the institute.
Objectives and Mission
The newly formed IIMC-TIC aims to accelerate innovation and promote technology-driven growth in the region. It specifically targets addressing developmental challenges and enhancing the technology-led entrepreneurship ecosystem across Northeastern states. The council will also provide policy-level inputs to support inclusive development in the region, according to an official statement.
Visionary Leadership
Padma Shri awardee Professor Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Chairman of the Board of IIMCIP Technology and IIMC-TIC, highlighted the rationale behind the council's formation. He emphasized the economic disparities observed over several decades in the East and Northeast regions, noting the presence of capable and hardworking individuals in these areas.
IIMC-TIC Purpose
The IIMC-TIC endeavors to adopt a human-centric approach in fostering innovation to ensure widespread societal benefits. It plans to collaborate closely with academic institutions across East and Northeast India, nurturing a culture of technology-led entrepreneurship among students. The council will actively support the establishment of 'Build Clubs' and technology communities within academia to encourage creativity and innovation.
Industry-Academia Collaboration
Facilitating collaboration between industry and academia is a key focus of IIMC-TIC. This partnership aims to address industry challenges and facilitate the development and commercialization of Deep Tech solutions. Such initiatives are crucial for bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in technological advancements.
Shrikrishna Kulkarni, Chairperson of the Board of Governors at IIM Calcutta, underscored the institute's pioneering role as the first IIM in India. He emphasized the responsibility of educational institutions in job creation, highlighting the evolving landscape where governmental job opportunities are expected to decrease.
