Students demand heightened security on campus to ensure no such incidents are repeated in future.

A canteen worker at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has been arrested for allegedly peeping into women’s bathroom at the institute’s hostel. The police said hostel residents have alleged that the accused also filmed a girl while she was inside the bathroom.

The police have registered an FIR in the case under section 354C (voyeurism). According to the institute, the matter came to the fore after a student raised an alarm after she noticed the worker peeping into the women’s bathroom. However, the canteen was closed for pest control work but workers were on the hostel premises during that time.

An IIT Bombay spokesperson said the alertness of hostel residents led to the worker’s arrest. “This was an attempt to violate the personal space of women residents...by climbing a pipe duct.” A police official said the accused has been arrested and further investigation into the case is on.” Meanwhile, students have demanded heightened security on the campus to ensure no such incidents are repeated in future.

The incident came to light amid the ongoing controversy over alleged leaked videos of the girls' hostel at Chandigarh University. The university has claimed that no objectionable video was made except the personal video which was shot by a girl and shared it with her boyfriend. RS Bawa, Pro-Chancellor, Chandigarh University said, “All the rumors of objectionable videos shot of other girl students are totally false and baseless.” The Punjab government has ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter.
