The Central government has approved the setting up of 38 new medical colleges in the 2021-22 academic session.

Amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the Central government is working towards improving the medical education and health care services in India. The Central government has approved to set up 38 new medical colleges in the country in the academic year 2021-22 including 24 government ones.

The two states that benefitted the most from the Centre's push on medical education are Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu with nine and seven government medical colleges respectively. This year witnessed a rise of 6% in MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) seats in India as compared to the last year. Now, India offers as many as 88,120 MBBS seats as compared to the seats available last year, which was 83,275 MBBS seats.

The Union Health Ministry official statement reads, โ€œThe rise in medical colleges is in line with our aim to provide at least one medical college for every district in India and we are also on the track of upgrading many district hospitals into full-fledged medical colleges.โ€

The National M.Sc Medical Teachers' Association (NMMTA) has been quite active on Twitter to raise issues related to medical colleges in India. Here are a few of the recent tweets of NMMTA:

"Opening medical colleges in remote locations is one thing, finding faculties is quite another. No wonder why 55% of the 157 colleges are non-starters. Only the tricks of shuffling faculties from one college to another during inspection might help @PMOIndia"

".@NMC_IND is aware that medical colleges appoint faculties just before the inspections only for the sake of getting approvals & that there are monetary benefits and is lucrative as is evident from its affidavit. Yet, it does nothing to curb this menace. @PMOIndia @OfficeOf_MM"
