Chennai: National Green Tribunal orders action against medical, dental colleges
The National Green Tribunal has ordered the government to take strict action against the medical and dental colleges operating without environmental clearance.
The National Green Tribunal has directed the Tamil Nadu government to take stringent action against medical and dental colleges in Salem operating without environmental clearance and also asked the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to monitor colleges in the area and check whether they follow waste management rules.
Of as many as eight medical and dental colleges in Salem, two colleges including Vinayaka Mission Super Speciality Hospital and Annapoorna medical college hospital at Veerapandi were found to not have environmental clearance. These colleges acquired clearance to establish after September 2020 but did not get approval from TNPCB to operate, as reported by TOI.
TNPCB to take action against units operating without Waste Management Rules
The principal bench consisting of Justice Ramakrishnan and expert member Dr Satyagopal Korlapati on July 7 said, "TNPCB is directed to take action against units that are operating without consent and authorization under Waste Management Rules, 2016, Water Prevention and Control of Pollution Act 1974, Air Pollution and Control of Pollution, 1981 and Bio-Medical Waste Management, 2011."
Chennai reports 596 new Covid cases today
Tamil Nadu has for a few days witnessed an increase in Covid cases. Today, the state reported 2,316 new Covid cases and Chennai reported 596 new cases. A 52-year-old man from Virudhunagar district died of Covid-19. Health Minister Ma Subramanian said, "People should wear masks whenever they go out as experts have been repeatedly saying that we will be living with such viruses in future."
