The students claimed that the two months of classroom teaching is not sufficient to finish the syllabus and to hold offline examinations, hence, the varsity should hold semester exam in online mode.
Calcutta University Semester Exams 2022: Around 200 Calcutta University students held a demonstration against the varsity's decision to conduct the semester exams in offline mode. The students claimed that the two months of classroom teaching is not sufficient to finish the syllabus and to hold offline examinations.
"Classes were held on campus only for two months and we are expected to write papers based on the whole syllabus. This is possible only if exams are held in an open book format like the last two years," said Arijit Saha, a student of CU-affiliated Bangabasi College, as reported by Zeenews.
This is not the first time that students are holding protests, last week too, similar protests were held at the varsity's main campus twice. After which, Calcutta University had also formed committee to decide the mode in which the upcoming exams should be held, according to media reports. Calcutta University has decided to form an expert panel to decide the mode of examination.
The committee has then recommended, that the undergraduate and postgraduate end-semester examinations should be held in offline mode. However, principals of colleges have been asked to give their feedback on the recommendation. Meanwhile, speaking on the same, Vice-Chancellor Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee said on May 26 that the University will make the final decision after getting opinions from all stakeholders.
A Calcutta University official said that while the faculty is ready to hold the exam in offline mode, a section of students, including the students' unions, want the online examination system to continue. Trinamool Chhatra Parishad state president Trinankur Bhattacharya also said general students were demanding online examinations.
