Complaint filed against DU professor for offensive remarks on Gyanvapi Shivling

Supreme Court Lawyer Vineet Jindal has filed a complaint with the Delhi Police against Delhi University professor Dr. Ratan Lal over hurting religious sentiments. The complaint was filed after a DU professor posted on his social media handle offensive remarks on the Shivling that was recently discovered at the Gyanvapi mosque complex.

Soon after he shared the objectionable post, the Associate professor of History, at Hindu College, has been facing massive outrage from netizens. Many also raised concern over the insights he shared with the students. Several people even tagged the Delhi Police Twitter handle demanding the action.

With a picture of the 'shivling', Ratan Lal wrote on Facebook in Hindi, "If this is shivling, it seems that perhaps Shiva ji was also circumcised." Now, the professor has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting a gun license for his safety. He said he has been receiving threats online.  Shiksha tried reaching our to Prof Lal, but call got disconnected.

The SC lawyer in his complaint stated, "We Hindus have high regards for Shiva Linga and we are devoted towards Shiva Linga. The statement made by Dr. Ratan Lal on his social media account is not only instigating and provoking but also stirring enraged emotions among the Hindu religion followers. One constitution provides every citizen with the freedom of speech and expression but the misuse of this right is inexplicable when it threatens the honour and harmony of the country and provokes its citizens based on community and religion and threatens the security of the nation then it is considered as a grave offence. The contents of the statement made by the Professor about Shiva Linga are derogatory and provocative. It is a quite aggravating and defamatory statement for the whole Hindu community."
