As many as 67 students at the Madras Institute of Technology, one of the four autonomous constituent colleges of Anna University, in Chromepet, Chennai, have tested positive for the COVID-19 infection. Most of the students are either asymptomatic or have mild symptoms.
The institution will remain shut for seven days in view of the increasing COVID-19 cases. Hostellers have been isolated in another building within the premises. A total of 1,417 samples were taken from students and staff on Tuesday and another batch of over 400 samples were taken on Wednesday.
On December 30, seven students tested positive for COVID while another seven tested positive for the virus on January 2. All of them were sent home and isolated. Thereafter, samples were extensively taken from students and the cluster of 53 emerged on Wednesday. “The students are being isolated in a separate building. They are recovering well,” said an official. He said those who have tested negative for the virus are allowed to return home.
Meanwhile, more than 50 persons, including students and a faculty member, have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati since December 31, 2021. An official of the institute said according to a government order, no student will be allowed to enter or exit the campus until further notice. IIT Kharagpur has also reported 60 COVID cases. Out of them, 40 are students and researchers.
