The Fifth World Congress on Disaster Management, an initiative of Disaster Management Initiatives and Convergence Society (DMICS), is being held at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. The four-day event that started today (November 24) on the theme of ‘Technology, Finance and Capacity for Building Resilience to Disasters in the contexts of Covid-19’ was inaugurated by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The aim is to bring researchers, policymakers and practitioners from around the world on the same platform to discuss issues of disaster risk management. The congress will have plenary sessions, thematic sessions, special technical sessions, concurrent sessions, and special feature events, and pre-conference events. Apart from this, poster presentations, exhibitions, and startups on disaster management will also be showcased.

We must strengthen international architecture for building structures to prevent disasters: Defence Minister

While speaking on the occasion, Rajnath Singh said, “Disaster management is about protecting human life and property. It is about protecting villages, cities, schools, hospitals and livelihoods. Unsafe housing, infrastructure, depleting forests and mangroves are compounding the risk of disaster. We live in a challenging geopolitical landscape where countries have to face traditional and non-traditional threats and natural calamities, including Covid-19 pandemic, which has wreaked havoc in the last two years.”

He said, “In the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, India has developed a large amount of vaccines which have been deployed for the well fit of many countries around the world. The frequency of disasters has seen a manifold increase in the last few years and is of relevance to us as an Indian ocean country, as 60% of these disaster occur in our region. We must therefore look at cooperating more closely to strengthen international architecture for building structures to prevent and manage future disasters.”
