After receiving a severe backlash against the open book exams, the University of Delhi issued guidelines to clarify the air around the mode of conduct of the semester examinations.

The University of Delhi cleared that the ‘open book exams’ are ‘not online mode’ and ‘minimal internet’ will be required for conducting the same. The clarification came along with a list of guidelines issued by the University for setting questions for the open book exams.

DU in the guidelines stated that exams will only require “minimal internet” for “downloading and uploading purposes”. Due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus followed by multiple lockdowns in order to control the virus spread ruptured the education system of India. Amid such a tensed situation, the academic institutions explored various other ways to continue the teaching-learning process.

Delhi University, in the guidelines issued to all heads of department, states, “This may please be noted that mode adopted is not an online mode, only for downloading and uploading purposes, there will be a requirement of minimal internet and any latest phone will serve the purpose.”

The university further added, “concerns related with technical aspects” will be taken care of by the examination branch and that a “mechanism” will be in place to protect the “interest of students”.

The University of Delhi came up with the clarification after receiving a backlash from many students and teachers questioning the feasibility of online exams. The major issues pointed out was the lack of or poor internet connectivity and lack of internet access for those hailing from economically weak sections.

However, the latest guidelines issued by the University states, there will be a two-hour exam for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in which students will have to attempt four questions from a total of six.

The question paper will be of 75 marks for all students except those studying in the School of Open Learning (SOL) and Non-Collegiate Women Education Board (NCWEB). DU instructed the departments to give “special care” while preparing question papers for persons with disability (PWD) students.

As instructed by the University, the deadline for the departments to upload the question papers is until June 3.
