The University of Delhi (DU) decided to extend its ongoing even semester until May 15. Earlier, DU scheduled to conclude the semester on April 28. The University took the decision to extend the semester after the recommendations reports of the University Grant Commission (UGC) on examinations and academic calendar headed by RC Kuhad was released. The report suggests changes in the academic calendar including the continuation of classes through e-learning mode for even semesters until May 15.
According to the reports, other suggestions include summer vacations from June 1 to 20 and conducting final year or semester exams from July 1 to 15 and exams for the intermediate years or semesters from July 16 to 31.
However, the varsity shared an academic calendar earlier that suggested that the breaks will be from March 16, and exams will begin from May 11. DU revised the calendar later and it will now continue conducting the classes until May 15, as announced in UGC guidelines 2020.
The Delhi University is yet to release an official date sheet for the May-June semester exams. Meanwhile, the university asked students to register themselves and fill the examination forms online. So far, more than 1.5 lakh students have registered for these exams. The last date to complete the application process is May 15.
The UGC guidelines 2020 regarding the examinations and new academic calendar suggest the beginning of the new session of fresh enrolments from September. DU is yet to make an official announcement regarding the same. As of now, the university is closed due to the nationwide lockdown until May 3. In regard with the re-opening of the universities, the report suggests, “The Committee is of the opinion that even if the normalcy returns by the first week of May 2020, it is in the interest of students/ institutions that the norms of social distancing in the educational institutions are maintained for quite some time.” This means that academic institutions are not opening anytime soon.
