On completion of the third year, students with a CPI (cumulative performance index) of 7 and above will be eligible for the course. Students will be shortlisted on the basis of their CPI and the final selection will be done after an interview process, he added. The institute’s senate has already approved the course.

In a bid to offer the diverse option to undergraduate students in the institute, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has announced that it will now be allowed BTech students to opt for an interdisciplinary dual degree program in management from Shailesh J Mehta School of Management, the institute’s own B-school.

Those students who will complete their third year BTech and BS programme this year will be eligible to opt for the dual degree in the academic year 2021-22. Dual degree students usually are most sought after even during the placement season.

Initially, the IIT Bombay is planning to offer only 10 seats each in two specialized areas as their B-school; i.e. finance and operations, said the head of the B-school, Professor S Narayan Rao. On completion of the third year, students with a CPI (cumulative performance index) of 7 and above will be eligible for the course. Students will be shortlisted on the basis of their CPI and the final selection will be done after an interview process, he added. The institute’s senate has already approved the course. In the future, more electives like marketing or HR can be made available based on the availability of faculty. The intake capacity can also be increased, he said.

It must be noted that students who wish to opt for the dual degree in management must earn around 102 credits over the fourth and fifth year. Students will also have to do a summer internship in management after the completion of the fourth year.

Most of the students in existing dual degree courses (in enginerring) are hired during the IIT Bombay placement season. In 2018-19, almost 96 per cent of the 182 students were placed, in 2019-20, 94 per cent of the batch of 166 were placed.

“IIT has a strong technical stream and a good management school, so we thought it will be good to offer a dual degree in management too. Many of our students spend two years after completing their BTech and even dual degrees to do an MBA. Now, they can save one year and get the same MBA degree from the institute. The decision has been taken in line with the National Education Policy 2020, that seeks to offer diversity in education programme,” said Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director, IIT Bombay.
