PAU students hold protests against offline exams

Punjab Agricultural University students staged a protest outside Thapar Hall of University demanding online exams. Students thronged to Thapar Hall, the university’s administrative block, at 10 am to mark their protest. The protesting students said that they are against the University's decision to hold exams offline as they studied the entire semester in online mode, hence, the exams should be held in online mode.

Angrej Singh Mann, a final year BSc agriculture student, who was leading the protest said classes were shunned earlier as teachers were staging protests against the state government before online classes were announced.

“The classes of this semester were conducted online and students did not have access to resource material and books. So, it is unfair for us to take exams offline,” he said. The university had earlier announced that the exams for second-, third- and fourth-year undergraduate students will be conducted from February 17 offline. Meanwhile, PAU teachers’ association president Dr HS Kingra has also extended support to the students.

Meanwhile, Panjab University has begun reopening its departments in a staggered manner for offline classes. Physical classes were resumed for some batched at departments of biochemistry and biophysics and the dental college of Panjab University from Monday onwards, and more departments are set to follow.

While the University will reopen the Institute of Chemical Engineering Technology (UICET) from today, the departments of mathematics and physics will reopen from February 21 and 23, respectively. However, classes for first and second-year undergraduate students will continue in online mode for now.
