As per the reports, the registrar was staying at the official residence on the University campus. On Sunday night, he lodged a complaint that some unidentified persons had entered his home, attacked him and took away his mobile phone. After that, he was also admitted to a private hospital. After his complaint, the police launched an investigation, verified CCTV camera footage from the varsity premises, in which it was found that a woman and three youths were leaving his house.
The police then identified the 25-year-old woman as a PhD students of the varsity, her relatives had attacked the registrar-in-charge because he had sexually harassed her. The girl student from Siddarkoil had registered as a research student in the department of chemistry under professor Gopi, who had taken charge as the Registrar in May. The accused reportedly called the student to his room on Sunday to explain some research subjects and she went there along with some of her relatives, as reported by the Hindu.
As the relatives waited outside the room, the student came out rushing and told the relatives that Gopi made sexual advances. The girl's relatives allegedly assaulted the professor, who got admitted to a private hospital after sustaining injuries.
The girl later lodged the complaint and Gopi was arrested.
