Punjabi University denies promotion of eight faculty members

Punjabi University in a meeting of the Syndicate has decided not to promote eight associate and assistant professors on the campus. While speaking on the same, requesting anonymity, stated that, “This is after a gap of over 13 years that the university has rejected promotion of any employee. The committees constituted for the interviews found the research work of the faculty members lacking, their performance was also not found satisfactory during the interview sessions. The proposals of the committees were presented in front of the Syndicate and were approved.

Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor Professor Arvind said the individual can apply again and be re-reviewed. “Now the filter-credentials and academic ability are being judged properly and promotions are being carried that way. The steps have been taken as per expert advice of committee members. This is being done to uplift the standards of the university,” he said.

Meanwhile, officials further said that the University has also discussed conversion of services of employees of work charge to regular employees. The VC said the item was discussed but some members had concerns and observations regarding it. “We will get clarifications on the same and go back to the Syndicate,” the VC said.

On Tuesday, students, teachers and non-teaching employees of Punjabi University held a protest at the University gates over its deteriorating condition. The protesters said they had high expectations from the state government.

Balkar Singh, leader of the Democratic Students’ Union, said that due to financial difficulties, all the facilities available to the students were badly affected. Students and faculty members raised loud slogans against the state government.
