The item that appeared scrap and waste to others made SPPU earn over Rs 1 lakh.
Heaps of scrap and waste item lying around Savitribai Phule Pune University was nothing but an ‘eyesore’ for the visitors. However, the same waste made the university over Rs 1 lakh. The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) started a cleanliness drive last month and received an unexpected response from the vendors.
The college authorities got the waste collected from the campus’ buildings, segregated, and auctioned the same. According to SPPU registrar, Prafulla Pawar, the faculty and students of the college roped in the cleanliness drive to combat mosquito breeding on the campus. The team collected and segregated almost 100 truckloads of waste. An online auction was conducted to ensure proper waste management. Now, the items are being dispersed and taken away by the vendors.
He also added that around five tonnes of electronic discard and eight metric tonnes of electrical waste were purchased by vendors for around Rs 73,000 and Rs 35,000 respectively. However, the discard is yet to be cleared.
Deepak Tupekar, the executive engineer at the estate department explained that there is a delay in vendors taking away the scrap because each scrap item is being carefully weighed and inspected to make sure that the vendors take away only the items that they have purchased. Also, the process is time taking because vendors take time to submit security deposits in each category.
