At least one university has extended its last date of admissions to the hostels while another is facing protests from its students over reopening them. The move comes in the backdrop of the Calcutta High Court’s directive to Visva-Bharati authorities to reopen the hostels without delay.
Several colleges and Universities in Kolkata have begun the process of hostel admission for outstation students who are not able to attend the offline classes because of lack of accommodation. The state government had earlier directed the schools, colleges and Universities to reopen physical classrooms. It must be noted that schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions have been kept closed owing to the COVID-19 restrictions.

At least one university has extended its last date of admissions to the hostels while another is facing protests from its students over reopening them. The move comes in the backdrop of Calcutta High Court’s directive to Visva-Bharati authorities to reopen the hostels without delay. Calcutta High Court has directed to break the locks of some of the hostel rooms of Visva Bharati University to facilitate all those students whose semester examinations are scheduled to commence from tomorrow; i.e. March 11.
The High Court had passed the order after it was brought to the court's notice that a large number of students are loitering in the Visva Bharati University campus since they have not been allotted hostel rooms. On the submission by the central university's counsel that a large number of rooms have been kept locked by senior students with their belongings inside, Justice Rajasekhar Mantha directed that the locks should be broken in the presence of a committee formed by the university, police and two representatives of students nominated to the committee.
