College, Universities in Kolkata to reopen campus hostels from this week
Colleges and Universities are gearing up to welcome students back to campus and attend in-person classes and will be reopening the hostels this week. The colleges had witnessed very thin attendance last week when it had reopened after the third wave break.
As per the college authorities, the unavailability of proper accommodation for the students is one of the main reasons that most of the outstation students have not returned to the campus even after the first or second waves. Considering this, the varsity has decided to reopen the hostels within days of reopening the campuses.
Jadavpur University will be reopening the hostels from today; i.e. February 7. Classes of several batches will also resume from today in a staggered manner.
“A detailed schedule has been shared with all the students and teachers regarding the resumption of in-person classes. All the hostels will be open from Monday onwards,” the University official said in a statement.
In order to make it ready for the students, the hostels have been deeply sanitized completely. “Some rearrangements have been made in the hostels so that social distancing can be practised. Boarders must ensure they do not crowd any part of the hostel,” the official said.
Scottish Church College will also reopen its hostels from today; i.e. February 7. The college resumed offline classes from Thursday.
“Many of our students come from different parts of the state. A sizeable number of them are also from northeastern states. So it is important that hostel facilities are available. Proper Covid-safety protocol will be followed in the hostels as well as on the campus,” said an official of the college.
However, the Presidency University has not taken any decision to reopen the hostels. For boys, there is the Eden Hindu Hostel adjacent to the university and the girls have a hostel in Salt Lake.
St. Xavier's College will be reopening the hostels from February 21. The college tries to provide hostel facilities depending on the capacity.
