West Bengal universities and colleges commenced releasing guidelines for online exams as well as internal assessment schedule. The process started after the decision from the education council came regarding the delayed re-opening of the higher education institutions. On February 3, 2021, the education council decided not to re-open the colleges as well as the university campuses at least for this semester considering the ongoing pandemic situation. According to the reports, Presidency University published a schedule of internal assessment, Jadavpur University conveyed that the semester exams will be conducted online. Both the universities have instructed the professors to ensure no student fails to join online classes due to technical glitches or lack of resources.
An official notice released by Presidency University states, “If the teachers report to us we will reach out to the district administration for help to bring that student to a digital platform.” Meanwhile, Professors from colleges affiliated with Calcutta University also informed the students that the exams will be conducted online.
The decision by the education minister and various university vice-chancellors on Wednesday to not resume on-campus classes have brought clarity to helping principals start preparing themselves and their students for online classes and online examinations for the rest of the semester. Semester-end examinations are scheduled in the middle of March and both teachers and students have only a few weeks to wrap up the syllabus.
Tapan Kumar Poddar, president of the Calcutta University chapter of All Bengal Principals’ Council and principal of Vivekananda College said, “Before Wednesday’s decision there was a lot of confusion over what is going to happen for the rest of the semester. But now we at least know that there won’t be any changes in the middle of the semester and we can continue to teach online. We can also start preparing for online examinations. Students in the first semester will be taking online examinations for the first time and we need to explain the rules to them thoroughly before the examinations in March.”
Before the announcement, many principals believed that the government might re-open colleges in a phased manner. However, now, things are clear.
