The higher education institutions have been directed to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour and government protocols.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a circular allowing all colleges and universities to reopen campuses for offline classes and examinations following COVID-19 guidelines. The commission, which is the higher education regulatory body in India, has directed the higher education institutions (HEIs) to reopen or work in online or blended mode. The order came in the light of the third wave of COVID-19 subsiding across various parts of the country.

A UGC statement said, “Keeping in view the situation of COVID-19 in their respective region, the HEIs may open campuses; conduct classes and examinations in offline / online / blended mode following COVID appropriate behavior and necessary protocols/guidelines/directions/advisories issued by the Central/State Governments or competent authorities from time to time.”

It further read, “The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare vide its D.O. No. MoHFW/COVID19/Edu.Inst-2021 dated 10.12.2021 has requested to ensure strict enforcement of COVID Appropriate Behaviour at all times and at all places in universities, colleges and other institutes of Higher Education.”

Colleges and universities in India have been shut for almost two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the educational institutions reopened for a brief time in December 2021, but these were shut again due to the Omicron-led third wave.

DU to reopen on Feb 17

With the decline in the number of COVID-19 cases across Delhi, many colleges reopened from February 7. The University of Delhi will reopen from February 17. The announcement came after a demonstration by students demanding resumption of offline classes.
