On the morning of February 22, Dr. Preethi was found lying unconscious in the staff room of MGM hospital in Warangal where she was on duty. She is believed to have injected herself with some drugs and with multi-organ failure she was admitted to the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad where she died five days later while undergoing treatment, as reported by Indian Express.
Dr. M. A. Saif, a batch senior who is accused of subjecting Dr. Preethi to deliberate insults and targeted harassment, was detained by Warangal police. The grieving Dr. Preethi's family members raised murder suspicions while Dr. Saif was being detained and asked a Telangana High Court sitting judge to conduct an investigation. They urged that the HoD and the medical college's dean be brought to justice.
The authorities insisted that there was no proof of the college administration's incompetence and placed the blame for the suicide on Dr. Saif. A 14-person college anti-ragging committee met and came to the conclusion that Dr. Saif was responsible for Dr. Preethi's suicide. That supported the police's conclusion that Dr. Saif had purposefully chosen to target Dr. Preethi and had a vengeful attitude towards her for two months.
