Draupadi Murmu, a tribal woman from the eastern part of India has taken oath as the 15th President of India. Murmu has been closely associated with education since her childhood, from being the first girl from her village to go to college to getting into the teaching profession.

The President of India, Draupadi Murmu started her professional journey as a school teacher before entering into state politics. Murmu worked as an assistant professor at the Shri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Institute, Rairangpur, and later joined as Junior Assistant at the Irrigation department of the Government of Odisha.

During her oath-taking ceremony, Murmu talking about her education journey said: “From the background that I come from, it was like a dream for me to get elementary education. But despite many obstacles, my determination remained strong and I became the first daughter of my village to go to college.”

Talking about her active association with educational institutions, Murmu shared her experience of meeting the youth while serving in various positions as a public representative and then as a Governor. “I have closely observed the enthusiasm and self-confidence of the youth of the country,” she said.

Murmu was born in the small village Baidaposi of Mayurbanj district of Odisha. She was excellent in her studies since her school days. Coming from a Scheduled Tribe background, Murmu faced many hardships and travelled hundreds of kilometres to Bhubaneswar to complete her higher education. Murmu completed her graduation in Arts from Rama Devi College, Bhubaneswar.

After she served as a school teacher in the Shri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre in Rairangpur, she joined the Bharatiya Janta Party in 1997 to begin her carrier in politics.

Murmu also became the first tribal to be appointed as the Governor of state, Jharkhand. Murmu created history as she became the first woman Governor of Jharkhand, the first tribal governor of a tribal state, and also the first Odisha-born woman to be a Governor.
