The points of the code of conduct that seeks to address irregularities’ in areas of marketing, communication and financing practices of the companies were discussed during the meeting.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has announced the government’s plan to introduce a policy to regulate the ed-tech sector in the country. Though the larger framework will take some time, the government has now decided to closely track the implementation of a code of conduct that has been adopted by a newly constituted ed-tech consortium.

The announcement was made after a high-level meeting between the Education Ministry officials and the new India ed-tech consortium that was represented by five ed-tech firms and IAMI. As per the sources, the consortium has shown willingness for self-regulation and has officially shared its code of ethics with the Ministry.

The points of the code of conduct that seeks to address irregularities’ in areas of marketing, communication and financing practices of the companies were discussed during the meeting. EdTech firms have been under the limelight for allegedly misleading students with false claims and ads.

The Education Ministry in December 2021 had issued an advisory asking students and parents to be cautious of the unfair practices used by several ed-tech firms across the country. The Ministry had also asked the student community to not fall prey to the advertisements of ed-tech companies and warned them against signing up for any load or installing any mobile ed-tech application without verifying the authenticity.

The advisory had further asked students that they should carefully evaluate the free services offered by some of these companies before usage. India’s ed-tech sectors have been gaining popularity amongst students for the past few years. The demand for online classes and teaching during the COVID pandemic has put several startups in a fast growth trajectory. Apart from these, many other startups are in the pipeline. Though there is no official data, as per startup data intelligence firm Tracxn, there are 9,043 ed-tech startups in the country as of December 2021.
