5 students hurt in group clash at NIT Srinagar

NIT Srinagar authorities had to call the police to control the situation. The clash took place between two groups belonging to different batches after a volleyball match.

Five students suffered injuries after a scuffle broke out between two student groups after a volleyball match ended in National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. 

NIT Srinagar authorities had to call the police to control the situation. The police said, “A scuffle took place at NIT Srinagar late at night wherein two groups belonging to different batches clashed after a volleyball match and five sustained injured.” 

Srinagar police tweeted about the incident. The wrote, “A late night scuffle happened in NIT Srinagar wherein two group of students belonging to different batches clashed after the end of a volleyball match.5 students from both sides sustained minor injuries. Police on request of NIT authorities entered campus & situation is normal now. 

In April 2016, NIT Srinagar was closed for days after clashes between non-local and Kashmiri students occurred following India’s loss to West Indies in the World T20 semi-final cricket match. 

The police used tear gas shells and baton charges to disperse the warring students after celebrations by Kashmiri students after the West Indies win against India irked the non-local students. 

NIT Srinagar, LCMA tie up to restore Dal, Nigeen lakes 

Meanwhile, NIT Srinagar has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jammu & Kashmir Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA) to maintain the waters of Dal and Nigeen lakes. 

The agreement was signed between NIT Srinagar Director Prof Rakesh Sehgal and Bashir Ahmad Bhat (IRS), Vice-Chairman, Jammu & Kashmir LCMA. As per the MoU, both parties shall work together to devise joint strategies and programmes to maintain the waters of Dal and Nigeen lakes healthy and clean.
