Celebration turns tragic as birthday boys drown in Hyderabad lake
Three students of Teegala Krishna Reddy Engineering College in Saroornagar, Hyderabad, who were pursuing diploma in engineering, drowned in a lake near a temple in Hyderabad, the police said.
The deceased have been identified as Hariharan (18), Ubaid (18) and Balaji (19). They were residents of Hayathnagar, Champapet, and Abdullapurmet. According to The New Indian Express, a group of nine students of Teegala Krishna Reddy Engineering College visited Laxmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Cheeryal village to celebrate the birthday of Hariharan and Ubaid.
While returning from the temple, three of them, including Hariharan and Ubaid, decided to swim in Cheeryal lake. While one of the them, who did not know swimming, went into deep water and started drowning, the other two went to rescue him, but all their efforts went in vain and the trio drowned on the spot. The other students and local residents also tried to save those drowning, but to no avail.
The police said while one of the bodies was fished out by the police on Wednesday, the two remaining bodies were recovered on Thursday. The police had to take the help of the Rachakonda Disaster Response Force team and professional swimmers to fish out the remaining two bodies. The bodies have been handed over to the family members after the postmortem examination.
A few days ago, three students of Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Guwahati were killed when the car, in which they were travelling, rolled over and fell into a nearby field. The victims were returning from Chandubi picnic spot in the outskirts of Guwahati when the incident took place.
