Covid management software created by AICTE-trained engg students earns global acclaim
CronaSafe Network, co-developed by software industry volunteers and 14 engineering students trained by AICTE, has been recognised by the United Nations as a Global Digital Public Good.
CoronaSafe Network is an an open source, public utility with various elements such as a tracking system to record and analyse suspects and contacts, a telemedicine call management network, data about the available hospital beds and quarantine facilities, food delivery service and ambulance network and a crowd-sourced guide to staying safe during the pandemic. The pandemic management software has received the United Nations recognition as a Global Digital Public Good. “Digital Public Good is the highest recognition accorded by the UN to open source software that can help in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in low- and middle-income countries,” a statement from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) said.
More than 300 industry software engineers have voluntarily contributed to build CoronaSafe network. The software is currently being used in over 200 hospitals to record patient intake and availability of facilities. This results in a central dashboard used by the Ernakulam district collector’s office for monitoring and allocating resources.
The AICTE and Pupilfirst had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to offer a six-month free online internship called “CoronaSafe Engineering Fellowship” to engineering students. The AICTE and Pupilfirst, through the national fellowship programme, identified 24 Indian students in the software engineering for an industry-led training to become full-stack developers and volunteers as the national engineering leadership cadre for public service.
A total of 50,452 students had applied for the fellowship out of which 24 students were selected. A total of 14 students, who finished the intensive training led by industry professionals, entered into six-month internships where they constantly upgraded the open-source software that now runs the war-room at Kerala’s Ernakulam district and in selected districts in Maharashtra and Haryana.
