Education Ministry signs MoU for IIT DELHI – ABU DHABI campus

IIT Delhi - Abu Dhabi is envisioned to be a research centric campus of IIT Delhi which will offer degrees at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) and the Ministry of Education in India to set up its international campus in Abu Dhabi.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.

Following the MoU signing, PM Modi wrote on Twitter: “This marks a significant stride in our educational internationalisation and is testament to India’s innovation prowess. Education is the bond that unites us, it's the spark that ignites innovation. Together, we will leverage this power for mutual prosperity and global betterment.”

Setting up of an IIT campus in the UAE was envisioned in the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed between the top leadership of the two countries in early 2022. In due course, IIT Delhi was identified by the Ministry of Education to roll out this effort of strategic importance to the country.

IIT Delhi - Abu Dhabi is envisioned to be a research centric campus of IIT Delhi which will offer degrees at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level, and will contribute to the research and academic eco-system of Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Degrees are to be offered starting 2024, details of which will be presented in due course. IIT Delhi - Abu Dhabi is expected to offer a diverse range of programs covering Energy and Sustainability, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science and Engineering, Healthcare, Mathematics and Computing and other disciplines of engineering, sciences and humanities. IIT Delhi has already initiated outreach programs for school students from the UAE as parts of its offerings for the academic eco-system of the country. Short courses and executive programs for the industry are expected to start soon.

On this occasion, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director IIT Delhi said “Our new Abu Dhabi campus is a challenge and opportunity for us to ensure that our education and research makes a global impact.”
