Engineering diploma student allowed to change branch for degree: Students will to change their engineering branch after completing their diplomas are allowed to do so while seeking admission to the second-year degree. Allowance on change of engineering branch after completing diploma is effective from 2022-23 academic year. The change has been allowed by the state directorate of technical education (DTE) to promote inter-disciplinary education.
AICTE approves change in engineering branch after completing diploma
The All-India Institute of Technical Education has also approved the change in the admission guidelines. Under this new rule, students completing diploma in information technology can seek admission to any of the engineering branches such as mechanical, electrical, and civil or others.
Students completing three-year diploma can get direct admission to engineering second year
Students who pass the three-year diploma get direct admission to second-year admission engineering courses. Talking about the new allowance in engineering admission, the Director of DTE Abhay Wagh told TOI, “The New Education Policy is all for interdisciplinary education. Until now, if a student wanted to change branches after diploma at the time of a lateral entry for a bachelor in engineering course it was not possible. Hence, we wrote to AICTE to allow this change in branch to students, and it was approved.”
Until 2018, 20% of seats in second-year engineering were reserved for lateral entries. In 2019, the authorities cut down this reservation to 10%. Apart from post-SSC diploma students, a few BSc graduates too, seek lateral entry to engineering courses.
The decision is going to be beneficial for hundreds of students seeking admission to an engineering degree. This will also give liberty to students wanting to learn a different branch after diploma.
