Engineering student commits suicide in Kerala
The deceased, a student of College of Engineering Thiruvananthapuram, was found hanging on the third floor of an under construction building inside the campus. He was living with his friends and did not attend the college on Tuesday night.
An engineering student allegedly committed suicide on the College of Engineering Thiruvananthapuram (CET) campus. The deceased has been identified as Shamsudeen (29), a resident of Ponnani in Kerala.
The police said the reason for death is yet to be ascertained. Shamsudeen was working at a private company in Thiruvananthapuram and joined the evening batch at the college only last year. They said the deceased was found hanging on the third floor of an under construction building inside the campus.
His classmates said he was living with his friends and did not attend the college on Tuesday night.His mobile phone was also switched off, they said. The body has been kept at the hospital mortuary after the postmortem examination.
The Ministry of Education had recently presented data in Rajya Sabha that stated that 33 students have died by suicide across the Institutes of Technology (IITs) since 2018. As per the data presented, in total, the IITs, National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) registered 61 suicide cases during this period. However, the IITs accounted for over half of the suicides, followed by the NITs (24) and IIMs (4).
