IIT Delhi, AIIMS New Delhi, IIT Ropar, and IIT Kanpur to Lead AI-CoEs Across Key Sectors

The Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, announced the establishment of three Centres of Excellence (CoE) in Artificial Intelligence (AI), focusing on Healthcare, Agriculture, and Sustainable Cities, during an event in New Delhi. These AI-CoEs are aimed at strengthening India's presence in the global AI landscape by fostering interdisciplinary research, innovation, and scalable solutions.

With a total investment of Rs. 990 crore, approved under the Budget Announcement for 2023-24, these centres are expected to operate from FY 2023-24 to FY 2027-28. Speaking at the event, Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized that these AI-CoEs would serve as "temples of global public good" and would play a crucial role in global public policy as solution providers. He expressed optimism that these centres would nurture job and wealth creators, thus boosting India’s start-up ecosystem.

Acknowledging the efforts of the apex committee led by Sridhar Vembu, Pradhan also praised the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in establishing India as a global AI hub. He highlighted that the CoEs will not only be institution-based but will serve the entire nation by driving collaboration among educational institutions, industry partners, and startups.

Sanjay Murthy, in his address, stressed the importance of interdisciplinary research and collaboration for achieving optimal results, while Saumya Gupta, Joint Secretary, Department of Higher Education, provided insights into the genesis and development of the AI-CoEs. A short film, "Make AI in India and Make AI Work for India," was also showcased during the event.

As part of the vision for a "Viksit Bharat," the three AI-CoEs will be led by top educational institutions in consortium with industry partners and startups. IIT Delhi and AIIMS New Delhi will spearhead the AI-CoE for Healthcare, IIT Ropar will lead the centre on Agriculture, and IIT Kanpur will focus on Sustainable Cities. The initiative seeks to galvanize an effective AI ecosystem, develop cutting-edge applications, and nurture quality human resources in these critical fields.
