Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant have said the exams for the undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the state are unlikely to be conducted before May 31.

Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant have said the exams for the undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the state are unlikely to be conducted before May 31.

There are more than 30 to 35 lakh students who were expected to appear for the exams. However, they couldn't, after all the educational institutions across the country were asked to remain shut since March due to coronavirus outbreak, the minister said.

Approximately it takes 90 days for the entire period from the announcement of the exams, conducting it, and paper assessment to be completed. And going by the same it will take at least 2 to 3 months to complete the entire process, he added.

He also emphasized that the state government is awaiting reports from University Grants Commissions (UGC), the national higher education regulator, even as a report from the Vice-Chancellors from Maharashtra on how to conduct the examinations is already ready.

The state government is trying its best to make sure students do not suffer in the process.

The UGC has released the guidelines on Wednesday for the pending examinations and other activities along with the academic calendar for the next academic session and admissions. The regulator had earlier formed two expert committees to give suggestions regarding conducting the examinations in the current scenario and also to formulate an academic calendar for the future.

As per the guidelines released by UGC, the exams for terminal semester students will be held in the month of July and intermediate semester students will be graded based on internal assessment of the present and previous semester. In all those states where the coronavirus situation will get normal, the exams will be conducted in the month of July. For current students, the college session will begin in August and in September for a new one.
