IIT Bombay's Gogri Hub Aims To Accelerate Domestic Membrane Technology Industry
IIT Bombay's Gogri Hub for Membranes Research aims to become a leading centre for advanced membrane technology research and development, focusing on scaling up lab-scale research for wider industrial use.
The Gogri Hub for Membranes Research, part of the Translational Research Centre for Chemicals and Materials at IIT Bombay, aims to become a leading centre for advanced research and development in membrane technologies. Recognising the lack of domestic membrane development and manufacturing in India, there is a vital need for dedicated research in this area. The establishment of the Gogri Hub at IIT Bombay represents an ambitious effort to pioneer innovative solutions to worldwide challenges and position India at the forefront of membrane science and technology.
In a global landscape where only a handful of countries boast universities equipped with world-class membrane research facilities, the state-of-the-art Gogri Hub for Membranes Research will allow IIT Bombay to harness and mature its research expertise in domains such as water and
wastewater treatment, biomedical applications, alternative energy, and gas separation. It will take traditionally conducted research at a lab or pilot scale, and scale it up for broader industrial applications.
IIT Bombay’s faculty will lead application-oriented, long-term interdisciplinary research projects and develop new products that are poised to address major challenges in membrane technology confronting India today. These include Gas Separations, Hybrid Membrane Systems, Hollow Fiber Membranes - which will be used in Water and Wastewater Treatment, Kidney Dialysis, building Bioartificial Organs, Ion Conducting Membranes for alkaline electrolysis of water, and many more.
At the inauguration of the Gogri Hub for Membranes Research, Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director, IIT Bombay said, “The setting up of the Gogri Hub for Membranes Research marks a significant leap forward in our quest for sustainable membrane solutions that play a pivotal role in advancing decarbonization efforts and ensuring a cleaner, healthier planet for generations to come. By bridging the gap between academia and industry, we aim to accelerate the translation of research into practical, market-aligned innovations.”
IITB’s distinguished alumnus, Mr. Mirik Gogri, representing the Gogri Family said, “As proud alumni of IIT Bombay, the establishment of the 'Gogri Hub for Membranes Research' is our humble contribution to the legacy of excellence at our alma mater. We believe that by fostering interdisciplinary research and industry partnerships, the Gogri Hub will not only drive advancements in membrane technology but also serve as a catalyst for addressing critical global challenges at scale in the areas of climate change mitigation and healthcare, among others.”
