IIT Delhi and Thermax Ltd. Launch India’s First CO2-to-Methanol Pilot Plant Project in PPP Mode
IIT Delhi and Thermax Ltd. have launched India’s first CO2-to-Methanol pilot plant project in a public-private partnership. Know details here
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi and Thermax Ltd. have laid the foundation stone for India’s first CO2-to-Methanol pilot plant at Thermax Ltd.’s Research, Technology, and Innovation Center (RTIC) in Pune. Supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, this pioneering project aims to demonstrate CO2 capture and utilization (CCU) technologies and play a crucial role in India's journey toward net-zero carbon emissions. The plant, with a capacity of 1.4 Tons Per Day (TPD), is designed to address CO2 emissions from various sources, including power plants, cement and steel plants, fertilizer plants, and refineries.
A team from the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Delhi will conduct R&D aligned with the project, supporting pilot plant operations and exploring future advancements. Meanwhile, Thermax’s RTIC team will scale up laboratory-developed processes and demonstrate the technology at the pilot plant level. This initiative aims to harness the industry-academia partnership, evaluating novel products and processes in an industrial setting and using feedback for further optimization.
Building on the success of a previous DST-supported coal-to-methanol pilot plant project, this new plant will capture CO2 from two primary sources: syngas from coal gasification and flue gas from burning carbonaceous fuels, then convert it to methanol. The project is expected to serve as a design template for various industrial applications, helping to build capacity and prepare domestic manufacturers to meet future demands for catalysts, absorbents, solvents, and other technology solutions on a commercial scale.
Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, DST, who virtually laid the foundation stone of the pilot plant on September 14, 2024, highlighted the project’s role in showcasing the development of indigenous technologies through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
Mr. Ashish Bhandari (MD and CEO, Thermax Ltd.), Prof. Naresh Bhatnagar (Dean R&D, IIT Delhi), Dr. Anita Gupta (Adviser and Head, Climate, Energy, and Sustainable Technology (CEST) Division of DST), and Dr. Neelima Alam (Associate Head, CEST) were physically present at the RTIC, Thermax Ltd., on the occasion of the foundation stone laying ceremony.
