IIT Delhi organises Open House on Sunday to discuss recent suicide events

An open house meeting was organised in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi in the open-air theatre (OAT) on September 3, 2023. It was held between 5 pm to 7 pm for discussions on the recent suicide events reported by the institute.

As per reports, the meeting highlighted that the concept of "Academic Rigour" feeds on the fears of students from varied backgrounds, especially from SC/ST community. The issue of mental health was also discussed in the meeting.

This comes after recently BTech student of IIT Delhi allegedly committed suicide on September 1, 2023.

The student was identified as Anil Kumar. He was 21-year old and reportedly died by suicide inside his hostel room at IIT Delhi.

Preliminary investigations into the case revealed he was placed on an extension due to some incomplete subjects and had been staying at the hostel for the past six months. The student was pursuing a B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing.

The body was sent for postmortem and further investigations into the case were underway. There was no suicide note found but it is suspected that he took the extreme step due to academic stress.

"The Dean of Students, CMO IIT, Chief Security Officer, Crime team and Forensic teams were also present at the time of breaking the gate open," a senior police officer said, as reported by TOI.

"As per rules, his hostel was to be vacated in June but he could not qualify in some subjects and was given an extension for six months to clear his subjects," said the official.
