IIT Delhi hosted the 17th edition of its annual “Open House”, attracting 3,500-4,000 students from 58 schools and colleges across Delhi-NCR, inspiring them towards Science and Technology.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi hosted the 17th edition of its "Open House" event, aimed at igniting curiosity and passion for Science and Technology among young minds. This year’s event drew nearly 3,500 to 4,000 students from 58 schools and colleges across the Delhi-NCR region, accompanied by teachers and members of the public. The attendees explored IIT Delhi’s role as an Institute of National Importance, showcasing its contributions to nation-building through groundbreaking research and innovation.

The annual event provided insight into path-breaking research works, student projects, and the numerous advanced facilities and laboratories available at IIT Delhi. Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, said: “We started with a focus on science and engineering, we continue to have that focus on science and engineering, but we are also doing things for healthcare, social sciences as well. We are collaborating with AIIMS and currently we are starting a centre of excellence for AI in Healthcare.”

IIT Delhi Open House Innovative Research Projects

The Open House showcased an extensive array of approximately 250 innovative research projects, with IIT Delhi faculty and students offering live demonstrations, posters, and concise 3-minute presentations to engage visitors and make complex research more accessible to young audiences. The event featured projects that highlighted IIT Delhi’s leadership in innovation, particularly in AI for healthcare, quantum technology, and semiconductor advancements.

One of the standout projects was an AI-based system for detecting gallbladder cancer from ultrasound images, designed to enable early, non-invasive diagnosis and save lives. Other notable innovations included a Laser-Based Solid-State Lighting System for energy-efficient white light, a smart walking stick to improve mobility for the elderly, and a Portable Microscopic Air Quality Monitoring and Bioaerosol Imaging System for real-time environmental tracking. Additional key projects included a 5G Authentication and Key Agreement Protocol on XBee for secure communications, Rapid Testing Kits for food and environmental safety, Atoms at Play: Molecular Dynamics Simulations for exploring atomic interactions and Mapping our Galaxy from Within to study cosmic structures. These projects reflected IIT Delhi’s commitment to bridging theoretical research with practical applications, delivering solutions with real-world societal benefits.

Q:   Is IIT Delhi good for an MBA?

A:

The Department of Management Studies (DMS), IIT Delhi, also known as DMS IIT Delhi offers a two-year MBA course at undergraduate courses in a full-time mode. IIT Delhi is a decent option to pursue an MBA degree. IIT Delhi ranked 4 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in the Management category IN 2024. Talking about DMS IIT Delhi MBA placements 2023, the average package offered was INR 25.82 LPA and the highest package stood at INR 41.13 LPA. A placement percentage of 100% was achieved. Thus, it is a good institute for an MBA. 

Q:   Is it worth doing MSc from IIT Delhi?

A:

Yes, IIT Delhi is a good institute for MSc aspirants. The institute has got a good overall rank from NIRF in the 2023 rankings. It has been ranked at the third spot among top colleges in the country. Moreover, IIT Delhi also provide placements support. As per its 2023 placement report, the median package offered to PG (2-year) candidates was INR 12.50 LPA. Some of the top companies that participate in its placements drive are Microsoft, Cisco, Accenture, etc.

Q:   Is PhD available in IIT Delhi?

A:

Yes, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi offers PhD in full-time and part-time modes. The doctoral-level course is made available by almost all the departments of the institute. Candidates who meet the required eligibility criteria and have the relevant work experience become eligible for admission. Currently, IIT Delhi Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology department is offering joint PhD programme with the University of Queensland.

A special IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi stall provided information on the admission process, courses, hostel facilities, scholarships, and upcoming academic programs at IIT Delhi’s first international campus, set to launch in 2025. Visitors also learned about the available laboratory amenities and travel allowances.

The Open House was inaugurated by Chief Guest Prof. Randeep Guleria, former Director of AIIMS New Delhi, who also delivered a talk titled ‘Healthcare: A Look Back, A Look Ahead.’ In his address, Prof. Guleria shared said: “We have to come out of our silos, in the future, it is not going to be engineering, computation, mathematics, humanities or medicine, all of them will merge to one bigger area, and if you start thinking outside your silos, you will have better ideas to serve humanity.”  

At the Open House, Guest of Honor, Rajat Mishra, Director & CEO, EFKON India Group, delivered a talk titled ‘Children: The Agents of Change'. Mr. Mishra, a 1989 batch IIT Delhi alumni, a dedicated social entrepreneur with a deep passion for initiatives in education, road safety, and environmental sustainability.

Hub for AI in Healthcare

Prof. Naresh Bhatnagar, Dean of IIT Delhi, highlighted the impressive growth of the event, noting that school participation has doubled since the pandemic, reflecting a renewed enthusiasm for science and technology among students. With IIT Delhi now a hub for AI in Healthcare, as well as the Government of India’s Quantum and Semiconductor missions, the Open House featured expert faculty presentations designed to spark curiosity in these cutting-edge fields.
