IIT Guwahati student found dead in hostel room
The victim, who has been identified as Prashanta Kumar Arukha from Odisha, was pursuing Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the institute’s social science and human resources department. The police have registered a case into the incident and initiated investigation.
A PhD student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was found dead in a hostel room under mysterious circumstances. The victim, who has been identified as Prashanta Kumar Arukha from Odisha, was pursuing Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the institute’s social science and human resources department.
As per the news reports, the body was found by hostel inmates who then informed the police and the room in which he was staying was locked from inside for the past two days.
The body of the deceased has been sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for the postmortem examination. Meanwhile, the police have registered a case and initiated investigation.
On on December 20, 2021, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan presented data on students who allegedly committed suicide in higher education institutions in the country before the Lok Sabha. As per the data, 122 students committed suicide in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), Central Universities, National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) between 2014 and 2021.
