IIT Hyderabad, start-up develop indigenous 5G technology
The maiden 5G data call was made using multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) capable base station that supports 100MHz bandwidth in the 3.3-3.5 GHz frequency band.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad and WiSig Networks, an Indian start-up, have announced a maiden 5G data call using indigenously developed open radio access network (ORAN), a 5G compliant technology.
The call was made using multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) capable base station that supports 100MHz bandwidth in the 3.3-3.5 GHz frequency band. “This is a watershed moment in indigenous 5G development. IIT Hyderabad and WiSig Networks have developed 5G wireless broadband technologies indigenously for the first time,” Kiran Kuchi, Dean (R&D), IIT Hyderabad, said.
He said equipped with these capabilities, India can be self-reliant in designing and manufacturing wireless broadband equipment and play an important role in future generation technologies, products and services.
“These solutions and products are available for Indian wireless equipment manufacturers on licensing basis,” said Sai Dhiraj, principal scientist at WiSig.
IIT Hyderabad Director BS Murty thanked the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and said IIT Hyderabad and WiSig developed more than 100 5G patents and 15 of which are declared as 3GPP 5G Standards Essential Patents (SEPS) to (Telecommunication Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI).
WiSig Networks Private Limited is a growing Indian startup which focuses on developing 5G mobile communications products and solutions.
IIT Hyderabad, Cyient tie up for 5G networks Centre for Excellence
Also, IT company Cyient had recently launched its Private 5G Networks Centre of Excellence and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Hyderabad as a research partner for the centre. As part of the MoU, Cyient will leverage a 5G core developed by IIT Hyderabad for testing various digital use cases and interoperability with components.
