IIT Kanpur Aims to Save Lives with Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) introduced measures to boost student welfare, emphasising mental health and well-being on campus. A notable effort included the Institute Counselling Service at IIT Kanpur hosting a 'Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training in partnership with the Suicide Prevention India Foundation (SPIF). The goal was to provide community members with essential skills for assisting those in crisis. 

The institute is dedicated to promoting a nurturing, inclusive, and academically enriching atmosphere that puts the mental and emotional wellness of everyone in the institute at the forefront. Through initiatives like the Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training, IIT Kanpur aims to cultivate a caring community where every person feels appreciated and encouraged to reach out for support whenever necessary. Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training at IIT Kanpur 

The event was attended by 110 selected participants, encompassing faculty, staff, hall managers, doctors, nurses, security officers, and students, who engaged actively. It underscored the critical need to recognize early warning signals, intervene adeptly, and link individuals to essential support. Through interactive workshops and hands-on activities, the training provided valuable knowledge on suicide prevention tactics and emphasised the importance of extending empathetic support.
