The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur celebrated the annual day of its Cell for Differently-abled Persons (CDAP). The occasion highlighted the significance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, aiming to raise awareness about the use of sign language for effective communication with individuals who are mute or deaf. Through the annual CDAP day, the institute not only acknowledges the challenges faced by differently-abled individuals but also actively works towards creating an atmosphere that embraces and accommodates these challenges.

The event featured various cultural presentations, including a poem recited by a student, a soul-stirring song performed by an MTech student, and a play skillfully enacted by children from the Ambedkar Institute. These performances not only entertained the audience but also served to illuminate the remarkable abilities and unwavering determination of individuals with disabilities.

Through the lens of creative expression, the event underscored the resilience and strength inherent in the diverse talents of those with disabilities, fostering a deeper appreciation for their unique contributions to the cultural landscape. IIT Kanpur director, S Ganesh gave information regarding the transforming influence of the CDAP on campus and expressed innovative thoughts to improve the inclusion of differently-abled individuals.

IIT Kanpur, chemistry professor, Siddhartha Panda presented his haptic smartwatch and braille learning device, designed to empower partially blind and visually impaired students. Followed by insights from Ashutosh Modi, professor of department of computer science and engineering, who discussed his upcoming project exploring the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance sign language comprehension and interpretation.

Coordinator of CDAP, Kaushik Bhattacharya, chairperson of the student’s placement office, IIT Kanpur, Raju Kumar Gupta, and grievance redressal officer, Sandeep Singh, were present at the event.
