The course will skill professionals in 5G, 6G, and edge computing platforms and make them industry-ready

India is pacing up to join the group of nations leading in 5G technologies. The recent developments in 5G testbed launch and ongoing research on 6G technologies have brought potential for a new workforce to take lead in this regard. It is to meet this requirement, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has crafted an eMasters degree in Communication Systems.

Designed and developed by the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Kanpur, the degree aims at skilling professionals in designing modern communication systems based on 5G, 6G, and edge computing platforms. The executive-friendly format provides a lot of flexibility for professionals to complete the degree anywhere in between 1-3 years.

After facing a massive talent crunch of 28% for jobs in new-age technologies last year, India is on its path today to build a world-class skilled workforce for 5G and its supporting industries. The promising technology is expected to require up to 22 million skilled workers by 2025 and is said to contribute $450 billion to the country’s economy in the coming 15 years.

Launch of India’s first 5G testbed - 5Gi

The recent launch of India’s first 5G testbed named 5Gi has proved to become a stepping stone towards rolling out this futuristic technology that will build smarter infrastructures and effective facilities. IIT Kanpur was assigned to develop the Baseband Unit (BBU) of the 5G NR base station, as part of the testbed. However, while countries like the USA, South Korea, Japan, and China have deployed the powerful 5G technologies in various cities, India has been struggling due to the lack of industry talent, capital, and advancement constraints.

The success of the first 5G call tested by Minister of Telecommunications, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said a lot about the potential end-to-end network that was designed and developed in India. There will be a growing demand for a highly-skilled workforce for 5G and allied technologies to serve the communication ecosystem.

IIT Kanpur’s carefully crafted eMasters degree in Communication Systems will serve these needs of the hour. This degree is going to cater to all telecommunications and other professionals who want to learn about Communication Systems and be industry-ready.

The high-impact curriculum is an amalgamation of theory and application. The theory focuses on signal processing and communication systems, to ensure professionals are industry-ready for application-oriented work. It allows professionals to learn to develop systems and processes for all 5G-enabled technologies. The degree is inclusive of IIT Kanpur campus visit, mentorship, career support, access to the placement cell, and incubation support.

For the momentum of 5G that has already struck us, the communication industry needs professionals who can gear up to expedite this technology at the earliest. Professionals signing up for the degree now will become the key drivers of the 5G revolution force in India. The degree will help them gain the 360-degree expertise required to shape and build the communication future of the country. The last application window for the degree is open till June 3, 2022.
