IIT Kanpur prof elected Fellow of US Combustion Institute

Prof Avinash Kumar Agarwal, who is known for his studies on internal combustion engines, emissions, alternate fuels and low-temperature combustion, is the first Indian to be selected as a fellow to the Combustion Institute. 

Professor Avinash Kumar Agarwal of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, has been elected as a Fellow of the Combustion Institute (CI), the United States of America. He is the first Indian to be selected as a fellow to the Combustion Institute, wrote IIT Kanpur Director Abhay Karandikar on his Twitter handle.

Highlighting the qualifications of Prof Agarwal, Karandikar further wrote, “Prof Agarwal is known for his studies on internal combustion engines, emissions, alternate fuels and low-temperature combustion. He is also a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, JC Bose Fellowship and elected Fellow of American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS), among other awards and honours to his credit.” 

Prof Agarwal completed his BTech in mechanical engineering in 1994 from Malviya Regional Engineering College, Jaipur, and MTech (energy) in 1996 from the Centre for Energy Studies, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. He then went on to pursue PhD in mechanical engineering from Centre for Energy Studies, IIT Delhi.  

He completed his Post-Doctoral Research in 1999-2001 from Engine Research Centre, University of Wisconsin, Madison, the US. The project involved development of experimental test rig, micro sensors, such as capacitance probes, fiber optic probes, miniaturised pressure transducers, etc. These sensors are employed inside the diesel engine combustion chamber to study the lubricating oil consumption. The project was funded by US Army, Cummins Engines, Lubrizol Corporation.  

Founded in 1954, Combustion Institute promotes and disseminates research activities in all areas related to combustion science and technology and aid the advancement of many diverse communities around the world.
