The Research and Technology Park at IIT Kanpur, known as Technopark@IITK, has celebrated a significant milestone by reaching its fifth anniversary. During this time, it has promoted collaboration between academia and industry to develop advanced innovations and technologies rooted in knowledge. Leveraging IIT Kanpur's inherent strengths and expertise, Technopark@IITK has established itself as a premier center for research and development across various sectors.
Technopark@IITK
Launched in March 2019 as a non-profit organisation under Section 8, Technopark@iitk represents a groundbreaking effort by IIT Kanpur to enhance R&D collaborations between the institute and industry. By encouraging research-focused industries to collaborate closely with academic experts, the initiative aims to co-create advanced technologies that align with national objectives.
Technopark@iitk is moving into its brand-new, state-of-the-art building, with an inauguration date fast approaching. Situated on the IIT Kanpur campus, this building covers 250,000 square feet and features modern amenities, including recreational areas, a cafeteria, meeting and conference rooms, as well as training facilities.
With over 65,000 square feet already occupied, the facility is proud to host numerous leading firms such as Laurus Labs Ltd., Meril Diagnostics, TVM Signalling and Transportation Systems, Geo Climate Risk Solutions, and Q-Line Biotech, among others. Notably, Laurus Labs Ltd., a Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical and biotechnology giant, has acquired gene therapy technology licensed from IIT Kanpur and is establishing its cGMP vector manufacturing unit within Technopark@iitk.
Also, the new Technopark@iitk facility will soon be the centre of defence testing facilities under DTIS scheme of the Ministry of Defence in the areas of UAV and Communications.
Prof. Amarendra Kumar Singh, Professor-in-charge, Technopark@iitk said, "The purpose of Technopark@iitk is to promote interactions between industry and IIT Kanpur in a holistic manner and speed up the transition of products and technologies from lab scale to industry. The companies can leverage the entire massive research ecosystem of IIT Kanpur for their R&D goals and growth."
He further added, "This includes hard core R&D projects with faculty, internships with IITK students on real world industry challenges, access to IITK R&D infrastructure, joint patents and publications, licensing and commercializing patented technologies. We are also working on mission mode projects as outlined by the country needs."
