IIT Kanpur Research Reveals Insights into Binary Fluid Dynamics
IIT Kanpur researchers have revealed new insights into the relaxation process of turbulent binary fluids. This research carries significant implications for comprehending and controlling the characteristics of these fluids in various industrial applications. Check details here
IIT Kanpur: The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) researchers have presented new findings on the relaxation process of turbulent binary fluids in a recently published study in the journal 'Communications Physics' by the Nature Group. This groundbreaking research on binary fluids, exemplified by mixtures like oil and water, questions established theories regarding turbulent relaxation. It also paves the way for novel possibilities in applying binary fluid dynamics across scientific, engineering, and diverse industrial domains.
Conducted under the guidance of Prof. Supratik Banerjee, the latest research, co-authored by research scholars Nandita Pan and Arijit Halder from the Department of Physics at IIT Kanpur, delves into the intricate process of relaxation in a binary fluid when agitation is ceased. The findings of this study by the IIT Kanpur team carry significant implications for comprehending and controlling the characteristics of such fluids in various industrial applications.
The study provides a quantitative analysis of how components in a binary fluid relax to a phase-separated state after turbulence stops. The bulk and interface exhibit distinct relaxed states. Unlike single-fluid systems, the relaxation process in binary fluids is significantly different, attributed to the conservation of a crucial quantity called 'scalar energy.'
Prof. Supratik Banerjee, Department of Physics at IIT Kanpur said, “The findings provide essential insights into the manufacturing and preservation processes. This can lead to more efficient production methods, reducing waste and costs. By understanding the unique relaxation properties of binary fluids, companies can optimize the stability and consistency of their products, ensuring longer shelf life and improved quality.”
The application of these findings in industrial settings will not only enhance product quality and sustainability but also drive innovation in formulation and processing techniques, potentially leading to the development of new products and applications.
