The campus will be located in Zanzibar and the institute plans to start classes by October 2023 with a batch of 50 undergraduate and 20 postgraduate students.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras will set up its first International campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The institute is planning to start classes by October 2023 with a batch of 50 undergraduate and 20 postgraduate students.

The institute will offer artificial intelligence and data science courses initially. In February, a team of five professors from IIT Madras visited Tanzania and held discussions with various officials on starting the campus.
“This would be the first IIT to be set up in Africa and can be instrumental in growth and nation building of not only Tanzania but of the continent," Binaya Pradha, High Commissioner of India, Tanzania, has tweeted in February, during the delegation's visit.

The new IIT campus will be established under the name IIT Madras at Zanzibar. Zanzibar will be one of three campuses outside of India, with the others located in Abu Dhabi and Kuala Lumpur. Each of these campuses is designed to serve its respective region, with Zanzibar serving the greater East African region, The Citizen, a Tanzanian Daily, reported.

Zanzibar offers both tranquillity of a relatively small town, allowing students to maintain focus on their studies, and access to the rich Swahili culture, which would enrich their experiences, the report added.
